The Northwood Ski Team arrived safely in Copper Mountain, Colorado where they will be spending two weeks training for the upcoming ski season. The athletes spent the first part of the camp skiing at Loveland Mountain where the conditions were spectacular. Gate-training is occurring at Copper Mountain where the skiers are training along side the US Ski Team as well as several other national teams. Former Northwood student-athletes Andrew Weibrecht ’03 (alpine racer) and Adam McLeish ‘97 (long-board snowboard) are among the top athletes training here at Copper. They are both vying for a spot to compete in the Vancouver Winter Olympics. In addition, Lindsey Vonn, overall World Cup winner, married to Northwood graduate Thomas Vonn ’94 will be training along side our athletes. She has more World Cup wins than any American woman and has four World Championship medals, including two gold from 2009. The Northwood skiers will also be treated to a visit from two of the United States best speed skiers, Olympian Steven Nyman and TJ Lanning. Both athletes will be speaking to our skiers about injury, adversity and motivation. Nyman and Lanning are both coming off of injuries as they prepare for the Vancouver Olympics.
The Northwood athletes are also keeping up with their academics during a daily, two-hour study hall held in a conference room in the Copper Village. Tests, quizzes, and homework assignments are completed during this time. In the evenings, the athletes are responsible for cooking their own dinners in their condos (a real treat), tuning their skis, and meeting with coaches to discuss goals, as well as analyze their daily video sessions. The days are busy, but everyone is having a productive camp so far.
