On a cold and rain-soaked Sunday, 18 October, Northwood Crew made its first appearance at the famous Head of the Charles Regatta, in Boston. Bow seat Melanie Starke '10, two-seat Jennie Robinson '10, three-seat Courtney Burnett '10, stroke Casey Kilduff '12, and coxswain Jay Jaskot '10 rowed against a tough field of race-hardened varsity crews in the Women's Youth Fours, to finish 72nd out of 77. With two novice rowers and a novice coxswain in the boat, the odds were stacked heavily against Northwood. But Jaskot steered a clean race through the notorious bends of the three-mile course, despite pressure from other crews fighting for the favored line; and the oarswomen delivered "a gutsy effort, and their best technical rowing in any race this season," according to head coach Howard Runyon. The two-day regatta featured national-team rowers from many countries, top-flight collegiate crews, and one of the strongest assemblies of high-school crews to gather anywhere in the world. More than 1900 boats raced.
Cold and rain soaked doesn't tell the whole story... It was miserable.. As bad a weather day as you can have in Boston... That the crew participated is note worthy enough. But more importantly, they finished what they started..... Great job.... Bill Stewart '69'
