Ellsworth R. "Yockie” Jackstadt, former faculty, passed away at the age of 86 Monday, September 12, 2005 at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh, NY.

"Yocky loved teaching at Northwood. He was simple and direct in a unique way that nudged the minds of his students into an understanding of the basic simplicities found in mathematical proofs and solutions. He was the most comfortable, however, when with the boys of the Outing Club. He loved the way a paddle curved the surface of a lake, the way a bird’s shriek pierced its way into a conversation. Mainly, though, the Outing Club fueled Yocky’s naturally explorative nature. The day after the return from an outdoor weekend, with the loudest hum you ever heard, he began to lay out his clothes for the next jaunt into the natural world where he was most at home.” – Virginia Jackstadt

"He walked into my room on second east my junior year, 10:30am and Mellor and I were listening to Crosby, Stills and Nash or It’s a Beautiful Day during study period and said "are proctors allowed to listen to music during study period, I don’t know, I’m just asking.” And he disappeared as quickly as he arrived. So subtle.” – Bernard Curry, class of 1971

"Algebra in the squash court, no heat mid winter, 30 below zero or was that 50 below zero, the Adirondacks, Jacket and Tie, no coats! Yockie was the best dressed, wide whale corduroy’s, etc. His humor was special and that smile. His posture was perfect. He gave me the nickname "Horse”. What a special man, there for us all in a very special and different way BUT loving! Thank you Yockie! – Reed Miller, class of 1972

"I can remember trading watches with Yockie like it was yesterday. He was such an individual. The last time we spoke to him was a winter evening in Lake Placid. It was snowing like crazy and Yockie was hitch hiking. He lit up like a Christmas Tree when we stopped and we took him home. My wife could not believe what a character he was!
Mark Driscoll, class of 1972

"I think we all felt the same way Mark Driscoll did remembering the first time we met that mountain of energy and the first time we slid our watch off our wrist to make the trade. Yockie represented all that was great about Northwood School. He took a place that was foreign to us all and made it home.” – David Augenblick, class of 1971

"Who can forget how proud he looked as he escorted Ginny and the Raymaley girls into the dining hall knowing full well the saltpeter was not working. He was the finest. The school should dedicate something after him. We were so lucky to have known him.” Paul Buckley, class of 1971
