The Ira A. Flinner Fund

Dr. Ira A. Flinner was the Headmaster of Northwood School for 26 years, from 1925 until 1951. During his tenure Dr. Flinner successfully carried the educational vision of the Dewey family into the modern era through two and one half decades that witnessed the school’s development into one of the most respected private schools in the country.

Dr. Flinner and his wife Bertha helped Northwood School weather the Great Depression, World War II and numerous other vicissitudes over the years. During World War II, sixteen "Northwood boys” were killed serving their country. Three hundred and thirty-four of four hundred and nine (334/409), or 82% of eligible Northwood School men and women served their country during this campaign. This is a proud legacy indeed. Flinner also celebrated the 1932 Olympic games with other residents of the United States and used the country’s newfound passion for winter sports to create a reputable winter sports program, especially in skiing and ice hockey.

The establishment of the Dr. Ira A Flinner Auditorium Fund is offered exclusively to members of the Northwood School community who experienced Dr. Flinner’s profound influence first hand. Northwood School graduates from 1928 to 1951 number 110 strong today. These graduates attended highly selective colleges and represent the strongest academic era in the school’s history.

The renovation of the Northwood School auditorium has created a centerpiece for the school, where performing arts, guest speakers, student presentations and community events of all shapes and sizes are held. The facility includes new lighting and sound, air conditioning and 225 seats. The stage has already been the scene of many extraordinary theatrical and musical performances. It is fitting that the auditorium will be a tribute to the "Flinner years” and the importance of a well-rounded multidimensional education.
