The game of lacrosse is in many ways inseparable from the history of New York. The modern game of lacrosse emerged from the native Mohawk game of terwaarathon, one of several related ball games played by the peoples of the various Iroquois nations and Algonquin peoples who lived throughout New York State. Northwood School continues the long tradition of lacrosse in upstate New York that has made the Empire State a hotbed of the sport. Northwood’s lacrosse program features a varsity team that plays a competitive schedule of New York and New England prep schools and upstate New York public high schools, as well as a JV program that plays area public high school JV teams.
The Northwood teams have traditionally featured both experienced lacrosse players with extensive stick skills and athletes new to the sport who bring the athletic skills developed in other sports such as ice hockey, skiing, and soccer to the lacrosse field. Coaching emphasis is thus focused both on instruction in the fundamental elements of the sport and on the development of sophisticated and competitive team concepts. The Northwood program is designed to serve the athlete for whom lacrosse is his number one sport and the athlete who seeks a competitive cross-training opportunity to make him a better overall athlete.
