Northwood School has a rich tradition of athletics dating back to its founding in 1905. Our Mission Statement at Northwood states that we are here to provide a setting for students to determine and attain personal goals through a balance of rigorous academics, an awareness of the natural beauty of the Adirondack Mountains, and the unique athletic opportunities available in the region. Hence, the athletic program supports the Mission Statement in educating our students to improve and foster their moral, mental, and physical development.
Students at Northwood School are three-season athletes. All of our athletic programs, whether interscholastic or recreational, offer each of our students the opportunity to develop their leadership skills while embodying the five core values of: Responsibility, Respect, Integrity, Compassion, and Courage. Each student is given the opportunity to reach his or her potential through a wide variety of competitive sports and recreational activities with support from our faculty.
All athletic coaches are members of the Northwood School faculty. Each one of our coaches is committed to teaching the necessary skills for an individual and team to succeed while encouraging athletes to improve on a daily basis. As a small school (170 students), coaches and students form strong relationships both on and off the field, ice, or slopes that last a life-time.
At Northwood we offer Soccer, Crew, Conditioning, and Wilderness Skills in the fall, Ice Hockey, Alpine Skiing, Nordic Skiing, Freestyle Skiing, Snowboarding, a Mars Club (male workout group) and Venus Club (female workout group) in the winter, and Lacrosse, Golf, Tennis, Rock Climbing, Cycling, White Water Kayaking, and Wilderness Skills in the spring. Some of our athletes compete year round in figure skating and freestyle skiing with permission from the Athletic Department.
